Protein After 45: A Simple Guide for Women Who Want More Strength and Energy

By Connie Grevengoed · August 31, 2026 · 6 min read

No counting, no rules to memorize. Just a simple way to make sure protein shows up at every meal.

Why protein matters more now

In midlife, our bodies use protein a little less efficiently than they once did. That does not mean anything is wrong — it simply means protein deserves a bit more attention on the plate.

Enough protein tends to support:

  • Muscle you keep and muscle you build
  • Fuller, steadier meals with fewer afternoon dips
  • Stronger recovery after walking or strength work

This is about nourishment, not restriction. There is nothing to earn and nothing to make up for.

The simplest rule: protein at every meal

Forget counting. Ask one question at each meal: where is my protein?

Breakfast ideas

  • Eggs with whatever vegetables are in the fridge
  • Greek yogurt with berries and a spoon of nuts
  • Cottage cheese on toast with tomato

Lunch ideas

  • Leftover chicken or salmon over greens
  • Lentil or bean soup with a slice of good bread
  • Tuna with olive oil and lemon

Supper ideas

  • A palm-sized portion of chicken, fish, beef or tofu
  • Beans folded into a vegetable dish
  • Eggs again — breakfast for supper is a gift

If you need a snack

  • A boiled egg, a handful of nuts, cheese and fruit, or a simple protein shake

A practical portion guide

A serving roughly the size and thickness of your palm at each meal is a sensible starting place for most women. Hands come in the right size for the body attached to them.

Do not forget water and fibre

Protein works best alongside plenty of water and vegetables. Nourishment is a whole table, not one nutrient.

When to ask for personal guidance

If you live with kidney concerns, are managing a medical condition, or take medication that affects appetite or digestion, talk with your doctor or a registered dietitian before making changes. HolyFit45 offers general encouragement, not medical advice.

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." — 1 Corinthians 10:31
